“Evaluation in a tester’s life” Seminar – How Softengi Tested Testers
On the 27th of November Softengi’s QAS Training Center, a training center for testers, held a seminar “Evaluation in a tester’s life”, dedicated to the assessment of tester as a specialist and correct evaluation of the tester’s work on the project.
The event was held in a warm atmosphere of the Zyferblat free space in Kyiv and was attended by over 50 testers and managers.
A correct assessment of the testing specialist is important not only for the specialist himself, but for his manager (test managers and test leaders), project managers and heads of directions, top management of the company, human resources manager and the customer himself. With this interest of all parties the lack adequate assessment system may harm not only to specialists, but also the project and the company.
Alexandra Kovaleva, a Testing Consultant in Softengi and one of the organizers of QAS Training testing school, faced this problem in her work – the existing evaluation system did not give accurate and correct evaluation of the specialist. Solution – create a new system. In her story “How to evaluate testers” Alexandra showed the example of a team of 30 people, how she managed to remake the system and what results they got.
As expected, the question “How do my managers evaluate me?” was painful as for the testers working in this field for a couple of months, as for experienced colleagues who already manage their teams. It was useful not only to listen to the experience of Softengi, but also to compare it with the assessment systems in the companies of seminar visitors.
For example, some participants already adopt objective management practices for testers using the bug tracker. After the seminar it was not enough time to discuss about mentoring of employees, motivation problems, and even it was decided to help to develop an evaluation approach for testers in a particular scrum team.
In the second part of the seminar Alexander Zinovyev, Test Lead in Softengi and one of the teachers in QAS Training school, shared the qualitative methods of work estimation for testers, which will be apparent for testers, managers, and customers.
In his report “How to estimate the time of testing,” Alexander told how not to forget the important types of testing and to avoid problems with the underestimation of missed deadlines and testing.
During the report he showed QC Estimation CheckList solution, which Alexander uses in his work. And on December 13 and 14 the testing experts will learn about “easy” testing documentation at the workshop by QAS Training Center and Alexey Fedorov – developer of the test documentation in IT companies and the “heart” of the St. Petersburg community of testers.
