Unicorn Systems Implemented HVDC Control System for BritNed
Unicorn Systems has implemented and launched into successful live operation a real-time Control System for BritNed. Under the official name of “BritNed Control Point System”, it represents a key and business critical system, as supporting the actual control of the High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) interconnector.
The Control System further strengthens the partnership between BritNed and Unicorn Systems, in addition to the existing auction system Kingdom (based on Unicorn´s Damas platform).
This new system ensures generation of Power Orders, i.e. the MW values directly instructing the submarine HVDC interconnector between United Kingdom and Netherlands. The input values are continuously received and updated from the Kingdom auction system.
The Control System also ensures automated data exchange with the systems of both neighbouring Transmission System Operators. The major benefit is the effective and efficient real-time control of the HVDC interconnector as such. The Control System also ensures security and reliability of the interconnector operation, as well as minimizes any operational imbalances.
The BritNed Control Point System has been implemented on the basis of Unicorn´s Open Energy Platform. This complex platform represents a solid universal basis for large IT systems. This platform combines a set of stable and proven components (such as e-mail and SMS notifications, broad configurability, monitoring and reporting components) with a series of configurable modules, allowing implementation of a wide variety of functionalities.
The delivery included not only the Control System as such, but also the delivery of complete infrastructure and its installation. This altogether ensures high 24/7/365 availability and operational reliability.
